THE AFLMA'S FIRST ANNIVERSARY

The 23rd of August will mark the first anniversary of the AFL Members

Association. It was on the evening of the 23 August, 2001 that Michael

Agrotis, Irwin Hirsh, Michael O'Brien, John Papadakos, Ian Pike, and

Tim Reddoch meet and agreed to form the Association. We were already in

contact with a couple of hundred AFL Members and we could see the need

for a body to represent the members' interests. Today the AFLMA is a

body that represents 4,000 (and growing) members.

GOALS WE HAVE KICKED

A year on from that Thursday evening, it's useful to have a look at

what we have achieved.

The AFLMA Committee has met with AFL chief executive Wayne Jackson, and

helped bring about some changes of benefit to members.  These include:

* Getting rid of the telephone ballot system for Grand Final ticket

  allocations;

* Publishing the ratio of actual Grand Final tickets available to member

  numbers in the annual subscription booklet;

* Restoring the age of junior membership back to 7 from 4;

* Reducing booking fees for reserved seating to a minimum for all games

  - except the Grand Final;

* Insisting that Carlton home games at Colonial Stadium should not be

  "fully-ticketed".

However, on key issues such as Grand Final and Blockbuster ticketing

there is still a wide gulf between what AFL Members want (and originally

signed up for) and what the AFL is currently delivering. Subsequently

the AFLMA Committee will continue to work hard, on your behalf.

AFL MEMBER CENSUS

We trust that you all completed the AFL Member Census (which had a deadline

of 5 July, 2002).

On 25 July, 2002 AFLMA President Michael Agrostis wrote to Shaun Welch,

the AFL Membership Manager, with the suggestion that the League posts the

raw census data prior to the issue of the 2003 AFL Members Package on the

AFL Members page on the AFL website.

In the correspondance Michael wrote "I could think of no better way of the

AFL demonstrating that (you are) listening to AFL Members feedback and how

this distills itself into the 2003 AFL Members Package."

AFL MEMBERS MONITOR

A number of AFLMA members have asked if we've made any contact with the

AFL Members Monitor group. In late June the AFLMA requested a joint

meeting with the Monitor group. The request was made via 2 members of

the Monitor Group, Graeme Banks and Faye Campbell.

We have recently been advised that our request for a meeting was

respectfully declined. Notwithstanding this initial response our

invitation for a meeting with the current AFL Members Monitor still

stands, and we will be re-issuing the invite to next year's Monitor

Group.

AFLMA GAME OF THE ROUND

We remind you that you can all vote in the AFLMA Game of the Round.

To register your vote go to http://www.aflma.com/aflmagoty.htm

Recent winners of the AFLMA Game of the Round have been:

Rd. 17 - Adelaide def. Geelong

Rd. 16 - Geelong def. Essendon

Rd. 15 - Port Adelaide def. Sydney

Rd. 14 - Western Bulldogs drew with Essendon

Rd. 13 - Brisvane def. Carlton

Rd. 12 - West Cost def. Carlton

Rd. 11 - Geelong def. Carlton

At the end of the season, all AFL Members will have the chance to vote

for the AFLMA Game of the Year from the 22 nominated Games of the Round.

A perpetual trophy is to be awarded to the two teams who played in the

AFLMA Game of the Year.

We believe that AFL Members are ideally suited to issue the award for

the Best Game of the Year. The membership isn't limited to supporters of

any one team and extends to those without specific club allegience. We

are a group of people who are among the most passionate supporters

around who appreciate good football.
